Why does the Microalbumin Test matter?
Kidneys should filter waste, not protein (albumin), which can be a sign of kidney disease. Individuals with diabetes or high blood pressure are at a higher risk of developing kidney disease.
If not managed, diabetes can lead to a more serious condition called diabetic nephropathy, also known as diabetic kidney disease. Early treatment of diabetes may prevent or help slow disease progression and reduce the chance of kidney complications. Otherwise, over many years, the condition can worsen and may turn into end stage kidney disease, also known as kidney failure. Treatment options at this stage include dialysis or a kidney transplant.
