How do I collect my FIT sample?

Simply follow the instructions included in your kit. The steps for collection are also listed below. If you have any questions, you can reach out to our Member Support Team. Sample collection instructions 

You do not have to avoid any foods or medications. Make sure you complete and return this kit before the expiration date printed on the outside of the kit. 

  • Do not collect a sample if you have hemorrhoids that are bleeding.
  • Do not collect if you have blood in your urine. If so, please contact your healthcare provider.
  • If assigned female at birth: Do not collect if you have experienced vaginal bleeding within the last 3 days.

Step 1: Complete your paperwork

Fill out the label on the patient info card. Peel the label from the patient info card. Stick the label on the biohazard bag. 

Step 2: Deposit stool sample

When you’re ready to have a bowel movement, unfold the collection paper and place it inside the toilet bowl, on top of the water. Deposit stool sample on top of the collection paper. 

Step 3: Open the collection tube

Twist green cap on the collection tube. Do not empty fluid from the collection tube. 

Step 4: Scrape the stool 

Scrape the surface of the stool with the probe. Cover the grooved portion of the probe completely with the stool. 

Step 5: Put probe inside the collection tube

Insert the probe back into the collection tube. Snap the green cap on tightly. Do not reopen the tube.

Step 6: Flush the collection paper 

It’s biodegradable and will not harm septic systems. 

Return instructions

  • Double-check that you wrote your name, collection date, and date of birth on the sticker ID.
  • Wrap the absorbent pad around the closed collection tube. Place the tube and pad into the biohazard bag. Seal the biohazard bag and put it inside the return mailer. Seal the return mailer and drop it into any U.S. Post Office mailbox. 
  • IMPORTANT: Your sample is perishable. Mail your sample the same day that you collect it. Keep your wallet card, with your sample ID, until you receive your results.

Sample collection instructions

You do not have to avoid any foods or medications. If you have cleaners or bluing agents in your toilet bowl or tank, remove them and flush the toilet twice. 

  • Do not collect a sample if you have hemorrhoids that are bleeding.
  • Do not collect if you have blood in your urine. If so, please contact your healthcare provider.
  • If assigned female at birth: Do not collect if you have experienced vaginal bleeding within the last 3 days.

Step 1

Complete all of the information on the sticker ID. 

Step 2

Take the instructions, brush kit, and test card into the bathroom. IMPORTANT: Flush the toilet BEFORE your bowel movement.

Step 3

After bowel movement, do not place used toilet paper in the toilet. Use one of the blue waste bags to dispose of toilet paper. Do not flush. 

Step 4

Use one of the blue brushes to brush the surface of the stool for about 5 seconds. If the stool is loose, stir the water around the stool. Gently shake any extra debris off the brush.

Step 5

Transfer WATER ONLY to the test card by gently dabbing the brush onto the white square labeled "1” for about 5 seconds. Staining may occur.

Repeat steps 4 and 5 using the second blue brush and apply WATER ONLY to the white square labeled "2.” Throw away used brushes in your wastebasket. 

Return instructions

  • Double-check that you wrote your name, collection date, and date of birth on the sticker ID. Seal your sample card with the filled out sticker ID and place it into the box. 
  • Place the box in the return envelope using the shipping label provided. Be sure to send your sample right away. It could expire if not returned immediately.
